There are a number of variations of "gons" based upon commodity types and shipper requirements. The high side, high capacity aluminum gondola is the preferred car for unit train coal service. Low side mill "gons" are used for finished steel products, heavy machinery and scrap. Coil "gons" are equipped with lift off covers for handling finished steel or aluminum coils. Wood chip gondolas are designed for large volume, low density cargo and can discharge with a rotary coupler or end door.
