Flat cars come in a variety of lengths, from fifty and sixty foot models to the universal 89' car. The 89' car is the preferred platform for all auto rack structures, and is also commonly used for farm implements and heavy construction equipment. Pipes, poles and building materials are transported in bulkhead type flatcars which provide secure lading against cargo shifting. Center Beam flat cars increase load capacity with the center beam design and also help secure the cargo against shifting. Special heavy lift flat cars can accommodate loads of up to 400 tons and are used to transport turbines and generators to power plants.
